Introduction:
The Asian Studies Programme is an interdisciplinary study programme which gives students basic knowledge of East and Southeast Asia as well as India.
The Programme consists of five modules. It can be taken as a 25 ECTS credits minor subject, or in smaller course entities. All teaching is conducted through the Internet and all lectures and most materials are on the Internet. Please check course sites for updated information.
If you want to complete the Asian Programme as a minor subject you have to take at least FOUR (4) whole modules (A,B,C,D or E are interchangeable) AND AT LEAST 25 credits in total.
The languages of instruction are Finnish (module A) and English (modules A, B, C, D, and E).

Who can apply?
- The students of the member universities of the University Network
- Polytechnic students can participate to the programme if their school endorses the study fee
- also other persons who are interested in Asian Studies can apply to the programme as self-paying independent students. With regard to non-Finnish citizens who apply to the Programme as self-paying students, the Network Board makes the decisions on admission case by case.
The study fee for self-paying students is 250 € for 4 whole modules (max 26 ECTS) or 50 € per credit for individual courses.
The structure of Asian Programme
A: Cultural History of East and Southeast Asia,
(in Finnish or English, options: 6 ECTS or 2 ECTS)
The module aims at giving an insight into East and Southeast Asia through the viewpoint of the central values in the region and cultural encounters. Students can go deeply into their preferred area when selecting the literature for the book exam and topic for the essay.
B: Society and Politics in East and Southeast Asia,
(in English, options: 6 ECTS or 2 ECTS)
The module provides the students with basic knowledge of today's social and political phenomena in East and Southeast Asia. In addition to addressing recent developments in individual countries, the module also deals with the emerging regional forms of cooperation.
C: Business in East and Southeast Asia,
(in English, options: 7 ECTS, 5 ECTS, or 2 ECTS)
The module aims at giving an insight into the East and Southeast Asia as a macro region with increasing integration into the global economy. The course focuses on the interplay between the international, national, and sub-national systems in Pacific Asia. Economic and political institutions as well as business environments are discussed leading to an analysis of the region as an operational environment for multinational enterprises.
D: Language and Communication in East and Southeast Asia,
(in English, options: 6 ECTS)
Overview of Asian language situation in general and in specific cultures and the interrelation between language and culture will be introduced. Asia, Asian identity and cultural factors in Asian communication will also be discussed. Basic Asian values and their dynamics and changes are introduced from the intercultural communication perspective. A particular focus is on interaction between Asians and Westerners in professional and social contexts.
E: India in World Politics,
(in English, 6 ECTS)
The idea of the module is to learn how the international system of the world is changing and to analyse the changing role of India in the
world politics. The course will offer the students an introduction to
Indian external policy through the Cold War period to the present
situation, with special insights to India's relations with EU and USA.
Finally India's role as an emerging great power will be studied.
The course belongs to the field of political science.
Arrangements:
Asian Programme starts in spring semester with modules A and B and continues in autumn semester with modules C, D and E. The programme is 100% on-line, most of the courses are arranged in e-learning platform Moodle.
Important technical details:
The lectures can be viewed with the latest version of Flash player, which is usually available in most computers. The videos are in streaming Flash format and offer NO DOWNLOAD facilities for students to review the lectures without connecting to Moodle. You also need a FAST Internet connection, a sound card and headphones / loudspeakers.
If the Internet connection is too slow, you will not be able to watch the lectures. Please take this into consideration if you plan to watch the lectures in regions with limited access to fast internet connections.

Application period is arranged every year from October to early November.

There is a Asian Programme Contact Person in every university and polytechnic. They are responsible for the practical arrangements of the Asian Programme in their own institutions. The Contact Persons function as links between the coordination unit and students in universities and polytechnics.
Coordination Unit, which is situated at the University of Turku, Centre for East Asian Studies, is responsible for operating the Network educational programmes and administration and e.g. maintains this website and the asianstudies -email-list.
