Application period for Asian Programme 2010 has already ended. Application period for the Asian Programme 2011 starts November 2010.
Introduction:
The Asian Studies Programme is an interdisciplinary study programme which gives students basic knowledge of East and Southeast Asia.
The Programme consists of four courses. It can be taken as a 25 ECTS credits minor subject, or in smaller course entities. All teaching is conducted through the Internet and all lectures and most materials are on the Internet. Please check course sites for updated information.
If you want to complete the Asian Programme as a minor subject you have to take at least FOUR (4) whole courses (A,B,C,D or E are interchangeable) AND AT LEAST 25 credits in total.
The languages of instruction are Finnish (A-course) and English (B, C, D, and E-courses).

Who can apply?
- The students of the member universities of the University Network
- The students of other unviersities can apply to the course as self-paying independent students
- Polytechnic students can participate to the programme if their school endorses the study fee
- Finish citizens and persons living in Finland with permanent recident permit can participate to the course as self-paying independent students
The structure of Asian Programme
A: Cultural History of East and Southeast Asia,
spring 2010 (3rd period)
(in Finnish, options: 6 sp or 3 sp)
B: Society and Politics in East and Southeast Asia,
spring 2010 (4th period)
(in English, options: 6 sp or 2 sp)
The course will provide the students with basic knowledge of today's social and political phenomena in East and Southeast Asia.
C: Business in East and Southeast Asia,
autumn 2010 (1st period)
(in English, options: 7 sp, 5 sp, or 2 sp)
The course aims at giving an insight into the East and Southeast Asia as a macro region with increasing integration into the global economy. The course focuses on the interplay between the international, national, and sub-national systems in Pacific Asia. Economic and political institutions as well as business environments are discussed leading to an analysis of the region as an operational environment for multinational enterprises.
D: Language and Communication in East and Southeast Asia,
autumn 2010 (2nd period)
(in English, options: 6 sp)
Overview of Asian language situation in general and in specific cultures and the interrelation between language and culture will be introduced. Asia, Asian identity and cultural factors in Asian communication will also be discussed. Basic Asian values and their dynamics and changes are introduced from the intercultural communication perspective. A particular focus is on interaction between Asians and Westerners in professional and social contexts.
E: India in World Politics,
autumn 2010 (1st period, 6 sp)
"The idea of the course is to learn how the international system of the world is changing and to analyse the changing role of India in the
world politics. The course will offer the students an introduction to
Indian external policy through the Cold War period to the present
situation, with special insights to India's relations with EU and USA.
Finally India's role as an emerging great power will be studied.
The course belongs to the field of political science."
Arrangements:
Asian Programme starts spring semester 2010 with courses A and B and continues autumn semester with courses C, D and E. The programme is 100% on-line course where most of the courses are arranged in e-learning platform Moodle.
Application period:
Application period for 2011 Programme starts November 2010. You can apply for the whole Asian Programme or only for the parts that intrests you.

There is a Asian Programme Contact Person in every university and polytechnic. They are responsible for the practical arrangements of the Asian Programme in their own institutions. The Contact Persons function as links between the coordination unit and students in universities and polytechnics.
Course Organisers are responsible for the academic content of the four courses.
Coordination Unit is responsible for operating the Network educational programmes and administration and e.g. maintains this website and the asianstudies -email-list.
