Advanced Level Online Teaching on Asia


Indian History, Philosophy, Politics & Culture, 6 credits

Goal: To give the students an overall understanding of India's history, society and culture.

Contents: The course ‘Indian Society & Culture' covers relevant issues that influence today's Indian society in its economic, sociopolitical and religious functioning.

Course structure: The course starts with an introductory module of the country and general facts. This is followed by a module on Indian philosophy and religions. Indian philosophy involves every aspect of the today's society. It has also influenced various religions that evolved in India . India is the home to four major religions of the world, namely Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism. This module first discusses how the original religions developed and then analyses what kind of impact the foreign religions (Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Zoroastrianism and Bahai ) have had on India .

The third module of the course deals with Indian history, government & politics, including international politics. It also discusses some special topics relevant today. After giving a historty timeline (7000 BC – 22 nd July 2008 AD ), the most important historical periods of Indian history are studied, starting with the ‘Harappan culture' and ending with ‘Independent India.'

The fourth  module deals with India 's arts and sciences. The module starts with ancient  contributions to arts and sciences and is subdivided into ancient contributions to mathematics and astronomy and ‘Ayurveda.' This is followed by an introduction to Indian literature and visual arts.

Target group: The students of the Network member universities are eligible to apply.

The course is recommended for students who have completed at least 2-3 years of study at the university. This course can be taken as BA-level or as MA-level course. For the MA-level course there will be additional readings and exam questions . Please check with your own deparment beforehand whether you should take this course as BA- or MA-level.

Taken as: online videolectures, course readings, final exam. The course is organised in UTU Moodle online learning environment.

Date and venue: online course. This course has ended and is no longer available!

Exams for the course are orginesed as home exams that start at 09:00 and end the next day at 23:59! Exam questions will be available on the course website.

Registration: Continuous application. The course is open to degree students in Finnish universities. To apply for the course please fill in the electronic form from below. You will recieve a decision of your application within 3-5 days by e-mail. The course is organised in the UTU Moodle learning environment.

Credit transfer: Students are not required to apply for a study right at the university of Turku on their own, the Centre for East Asian Studies will do this on their behalf. At the end of the term the students will be sent a transcript of records from Turku. The students need to take the transcript to their own university and make sure that the credits are transferred from Turku to their own respective universities. This will not happen automatically!

Before enrolling on the course the students should check with their own home department that this course can be accepted as part of their degree in their own university.
