Advanced Level Online Teaching on Asia


Globalisation and Indian Economy, 6 credits

Goal: To give the students an overall understanding of India 's economy in the framework of globalisation.

Contents: This online course deals with today's India from an economic perspective with emphasis on economic and business events also in the framework of history and globalization.

Course Structure:

1. Under ‘Sectoral Analysis,' a brief analysis of the year 2007 – 2008 is done at first, it is followed by deeper analyses of the sectors: agriculture, industry, services and banking. The subsequent part of this module deals with special topics like intervention of the government, currency system, infrastructure, financial institutions, socio- economic characteristics of the Indian economy, external trade a & investment, India's resource consumption and energy policy. Also Indian history is studied from Harappan culture to independent India .

2. Hurdles in the economic liberalization process covers issues such as poverty, neglect of women and children, lack of education, environmental degradation, population explosion, lack of infrastructural projects, high levels of corruption, problems in agriculture and urban challenges.

3. Doing business in India ' elucidates on how to do business in India , talks about multinationals and foreign direct investments and focuses on Indian investments abroad. The latter part of this module deals with special economic zones and India 's IT industry in 2008, elaborates on India 's debt capital market and provides some highlights of the commodities market.

4. ‘Globalization & BRIC Analysis' discusses theories on globalization in the framework of north south outsourcing keeping India in mind, does an in depth economic analysis of what BRIC (Brazil, India, Russia & China) and finally undertakes economic forecasts with reference to India's growth, based on the economic models of one of the leading global investment management firm: Goldman Sachs.

Target group: The students of the Network member universities are eligible to apply.

The course is recommended for students who have completed at least 2-3 years of study at the university. This course can be taken as BA-level or as MA-level course. For the MA-level course there will be additional readings and exam questions . Please check with your own deparment beforehand whether you should take this course as BA- or MA-level.

Taken as: online videolectures, course readings, final exam. The course is organised in UTU Moodle online learning environment.

Date and venue: online course. This course has ended and is no longer available!

Exams for the course are orginesed as home exams that start at 09:00 and end the next day at 23:59! Exam questions will be available on the course website.


Registration: Continuous application. The course is open to degree students in Finnish universities. To apply for the course please fill in the electronic form from below. You will recieve a decision of your application within 3-5 days by e-mail. The course is organised in the UTU Moodle learning environment.

Credit transfer: Students are not required to apply for a study right at the university of Turku on their own, the Centre for East Asian Studies will do this on their behalf. At the end of the term the students will be sent a transcript of records from Turku. The students need to take the transcript to their own university and make sure that the credits are transferred from Turku to their own respective universities. This will not happen automatically!

Before coming to the course the students should check with their own home department that this course can be accepted as part of their degree in their own university.
