Advanced Level Online Teaching on Asia


Contemporary Japanese Politics and Society, 4 credits

Goal: The course gives students tools for understanding and analyzing important, topical and partly interrelated issues in contemporary Japanese society.

Content: The course builds an understanding of undercurrents behind recent changes in Japanese society by studying the ethos and practices of postwar economic growth, the recession of the 1990s as well as the reforms, restructuring, and new openness of the past few years.

Topics include: democracy and media, the contruction state and environmental problems, development of civil society, changes in family structure, education, organized crime and nationalism. Students are encouraged to find a topis of special interest to them.

Target Group: The students of the Network member universities are eligible to apply. The course is recommended for advanced level (MA) students.

Taken as:

- Lectures (24h)
- Four writing assignments based on lectures and supplementary materials
- Exam


Course Schedule: Period IV. The course starts 10.3.2010.

Grading: on a scale of 1-5

Application for the course: A maximum of 40 students will be accepted to the course. Apply by 9 March through online application form LINK>>>

Credit transfer: Students are not required to apply for a study right at the university of Turku on their own, the Centre for East Asian Studies will do this on their behalf. At the end of the term the students will be sent a transcript of records from Turku. The students need to take the transcript to their own university and make sure that the credits are transferred from Turku to their own respective universities. This will not happen automatically!

Before enrolling on the course the students should check with their own home department that this course can be accepted as part of their degree in their own university.
