Goal: The student will be able to describe the and analyze the political, economic and social transformation of Japan during the decades following World War II. In political and economic issues the focus is both on national and international context.

Contents: Thematic modules consist of national and international politics, Japan in international economics, the national identity, educational policy, and social system of Japan.

Target group: The students of the Network member universities are eligible to apply. The course is recommended for advanced level (MA) students.

Taken as:

-Online lectures (26h) offered by Japanese and Finnish experts (18.1. - 14.2.2010)
-Exam (three optional dates: 29.1., 12.2. or 26.2.)
-Essay (deadline 3.3.2010)
-Additional reading: Stronach Bruce (1995). Beyond the Rising Sun: Nationalism in Contemporary Japan. Westport, CT, USA: Greenwood Publishing Group.

The Book is accessible through Ebrary online books database.

The lectures and additional reading are taken as a joint exam (4cr). In addition, each student will write a course paper (2cr) where s/he focuses on a chosen topic related to the course theme.

Grading: on a scale of 1-5; (exams and lecture 70%; essay 30%)
