ONLINE COURSES FOR PHD STUDENTS

The PhD level online courses provide effective tools which help the doctoral students to develop a solid methodological and theoretical foundation for their research work. The courses enable doctoral students to design and carry out a challenging PhD program of original research.


Two courses will be offered from spring term 2012 onwards:

1) Fieldwork Methods in Asian Studies (China, Japan, Indonesia) (4 ECTS)

2) Localising Theories (4 ECTS)

Application periods: 2-13 September 2013 & 11-22 November 2013

The courses are arranged in cooperation with The Doctoral Program of Contemporary Asian Studies (DAS)

 

1. Fieldwork Methods in Asian Studies (China, Japan, Indonesia) (4 ECTS)

The course deals with approaches to the collection and analysis of different kinds of data in a selected Asian country. Moreover, it examines the challenges and opportunities involved in applying them. Topics include the use of historical archives; the collection and analysis of primary sources; as well as interviewing and surveys.

  • The course materials will contain expert lectures and readings. Students write a 3-4 000 word essay (4 ECTS) which is evaluated by an examiner specialized in the topic. The examiner provides written comments on the essay. The essay can be submitted twice a year: in May and in December.
    • Doctoral students of the Asia Network member universities are eligible to take the courses for free. Other students can take the courses as external students by paying a 200€ course fee / course.

    2. Localising Theories (4 ECTS)

    The course introduces the doctoral student to the academic discussion on the relevance of area studies and the applicability of universal theories on localities.

    • The course materials will contain expert lectures and readings. Students write a 3-4 000 word essay (4 ECTS) which is evaluated by an examiner specialized in the topic. The examiner provides written comments on the essay. The essay can be submitted twice a year: in May and in December.
      • Doctoral students of the Asia Network member universities are eligible to take the courses for free. Other students can take the courses as external students by paying a 200€ course fee / course.
